My Mornings Are Mine

Warning: This is a hit piece against anyone who likes setting meetings before 10am. It’s not cool.

What’s the big deal?

After all, work starts at nine, right?

Sure, but I’d rather wait to be derailed. And that’s exactly what happens to most of us tech folk when we have to join a 9am call—our peaceful moments to reflect, organize, and plan our day are ripped away. And now it’s time for… more meetings.

Think about it this way: in software development, most of my tasks are a tad complicated. I need to build context on a ticket, dig in to the relevant systems, and form a game plan (some call this the “ramp-up”) all before I can really tackle a problem. Depending on the size of the issue, this can take an hour or longer from whenever I manage to start.

If my morning starts with a meeting, and moves into standup, then my 1:1, and now it’s lunch, but I have a planning meeting in the afternoon and I need to do some code review and QA has a question… and now it’s time to ramp up to my task. And now it’s 5pm.

Okay, but what if there’s new info?

Oh, priorities are entirely different overnight? Then absolutely stop me from wasting my time! Just please, send a bit of context with the invite—a meeting description or Slack message that will put me in the right headspace and make our time as efficient as possible. But maybe set it for 9:15am… the bus might be late.

That’s it. Maybe you agree, maybe not—at least you heard me out. If we work together and I passive-aggressively humorously sent you this link, let’s chat about where else to stick those project syncs.
